A local father and app developer has released Mathicorn, a free, unicorn-themed mobile and web game that helps children learn multiplication — with no ads, no cost, and no collection of personal data about kids.
Brian Harmon built the app after watching his 10-year-old daughter, Audrey, struggle to enjoy practicing her times tables. Frustrated by existing apps cluttered with advertising and data collection, he decided to build one he could trust for his own child — and then make it free for every family and classroom.
"I just wanted something Audrey would actually want to open, that I didn't have to worry about. Once it worked for her, it didn't make sense to keep it to ourselves."
Behind its pastel unicorns and friendly mascots, Mathicorn uses established teaching methods — retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and strategy hints — to help kids build fluency with multiplication facts from 0 to 12. The app is designed to be encouraging rather than stressful, framing timed practice as "beat your best" rather than a pressured countdown.
Mathicorn is built with children's privacy in mind: it contains no advertising, no behavioral tracking, and collects no personal information about children beyond an optional display name and avatar.
The app is available now, free, on the Apple App Store and free to play on the web.
